What's the purpose of the air space?The purpose of the air space is to allow ventilation. This is otherwise known
as a vented rain-screen effect.
As an indoor application, the air space is necessary for use behind a wood stove. It allows the hot air to ventilate, thereby allowing the wall surface behind the brick to stay cooler.
Yes, up to 50% reduction in clearance over the wood stove manufacturer's label can be achieved, as per ULC Code.
Can it be sealed or painted?Yes, but it is not necessary. The colour pigments are throughout the bricks, and an ad-mix is used to seal the product, inside and out. The colours are fade resistant. However, if custom colours are desired the bricks can be painted.
